Finding Our Voice
At Chesterfield, our EYFS curriculum is driven by a single, transformative mission: to give every child the tools to communicate and the confidence to be heard.
We understand that our children often join us from starting points well below age-related expectations, navigating the dual challenges of economic deprivation and the complexities of learning English as an additional language. For us, Speech, Language, and Communication (SLCN) is not just a curriculum area; it is at the heart of our practice.
We aim to provide a ‘communication-first’ environment where every interaction is an opportunity for language scaffolded by high-quality adult modelling. To counter the impact of deprivation, we incorporate real-world encounters that build the cultural capital and vocabulary our children need to make sense of the world.
By prioritising emotional security and early intervention, we aim to transform our setting into a bridge for future learning in Key Stage 1 and beyond. Our goal is that by the end of Reception, every child has the vocabulary and social confidence to express their thoughts, collaborate with others and access the Year 1 curriculum with independence.
Our curriculum is based on the seven areas of learning and development:
