Our Vision

At Chesterfield, we believe that art is a vital medium for children to explore their creativity, express their individuality, and make sense of the world around them. Led by our Art Lead, Nicola Green, our curriculum follows the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which is fully aligned with National Curriculum expectations.

Our provision ensures that art is not just about making beautiful outcome-focused pieces, but about developing critical thinking, fine motor control, visual literacy, and problem-solving through hands-on experimentation.

The Kapow Curriculum Framework

Through Kapow's structured and progressive curriculum, pupils revisit and build upon four core strands from Early Years through Key Stage 2:

• Generating Ideas: Learning to sketch, annotate, plan, and refine creative ideas using dedicated artist sketchbooks.

• Making & Technical Skills: Developing mastery in drawing, painting, sculpture, 3D craft, collage, printmaking, and digital art.

• Formal Elements of Art: Mastering essential artistic concepts including line, shape, colour, tone, texture, pattern, and form.

• Knowledge of Artists & Designers: Investigating a diverse range of historic and contemporary artists, craft makers, architects, and designers across different cultures.

Progression & The Artist's Journey

Under Kapow’s dynamic framework, children work as real artists:

• Experimentation & Risk-Taking: Pupils are encouraged to explore mediums, test techniques, and view mistakes as valuable parts of the creative process.

• Sketchbooks as Creative Hubs: Children use sketchbooks to record observations, test colour mixing, and document their personal creative journeys over time.

• Evaluation & Critique: Children learn to discuss, appraise, and reflect upon their own artwork and that of their peers using rich artistic vocabulary.
