Music

Intent: 

  • At Chesterfield, we want our children to love music. Inline with our curriculum driver, developing aspirations and possibilities for all, we want children to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be music producers, song writers or composers.
  • We encourage children to learn from, be inspired by the work of great musicians and understand the contribution music has made to society. Our curriculum drivers of oracy, emotional intelligence and aspirations for all shape every aspect of music, are embedded in teaching and learning and develop the child as a whole.
  • Our high quality music education engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
  • Our curriculum ensures children experience and understand what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
  • We teach children to sing in tune, to understand how music is created, produced and communicated, and enable them to develop their curiosity for the subject by creating and composing music on their own and with others.
  • Children are also given every opportunity to develop their skills and appreciation of music through instrument workshops, clubs and performances both in and out of school. Together, these experiences increase wellbeing and develop positive attitudes to learning which impact on progress and attainment across all areas of the curriculum.

Implementation: 

  • Through our Musical programme the children develop their understanding, make musical judgements, apply their new learning, develop their aural memory, express themselves physically, emotionally and through discussion and create their own musical ideas.
  • Music is a skill based subject and must be engaged with and taught practically. We demonstrate this through the spiral of learning, adding to musical concepts throughout the curriculum but ensuring previous knowledge and skills continue to be developed.
  • Children develop their singing voices, using body percussion and whole body actions, and learning to handle and play classroom instruments effectively to create and express their own and others’ music.
  • Every child has the opportunity to learn to play the ukulele in Year 4 and various singing projects are undertaken throughout KS1 and KS2.
  • We discretely teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms. 
  • During the school year, children are provided with opportunities to rehearse and take part in a range of musical performances, these include concerts and assemblies.

Other enrichment opportunities include:

  • Access to a range of instruments.
  • Annual visits to pantomimes at the Millfield Theatre.
  • Performing in the school choir at Christmas concerts etc.
  • Performing with local schools in school choir e.g. Enfield Spring Concert Festival
  • Year group performances e.g. Christmas Nativity to the Year 6 End of Year Production 
  • Variety of performers and visitors perform to the school such as ‘ChickenShed’ and Traditional Tales Storytellers.
  • Opportunities for children to learn an instrument through the Enfield Music Service.
  • West-End theatre visits 

Impact: 

By the end of their primary education our children will:

  • Enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer.
  • Be able to discuss and share their own thoughts, opinions and ideas on music, acknowledging and respecting that these may vary and that this is positive.
  • Develop their imagination and creativity.
  • Have a rapidly widening repertoire which they use to create original, imaginative, fluent and distinctive composing and performance work.
  • Have a musical understanding underpinned by high levels of aural perception, internalisation and knowledge of music, including high or rapidly developing levels of technical expertise.
  • Have very good awareness and appreciation of different musical traditions and genres.
  • Have an understanding of how musical provenance – the historical, social and cultural origins of music – contributes to the diversity of musical style.
  • Have the ability to give precise written and verbal explanations, using musical terminology effectively, accurately and appropriately.
  • Have a passion for and commitment to a diverse range of musical activities.
